Star Struck! - Where the warriors and entertainment collide!

Professor Gary Lee and the Sport Karate Museum welcome you to the new Star Struck! page.

Discover the rich world of martial arts in the cinema, documentaries, and television from around the globe. We will explore the contributions the martial arts have made to our daily lives over the years which for many of us began with being inspired by a TV show or movie to train, hoping to become the next Chuck Norris or Bruce Lee! Countless members of our Sport Karate Museum History General community have made vast contributions to the entertainment industry through the decades. Star Struck! will introduce you to the martial arts masters featured as martial arts star characters, those who have labored behind the scenes as fight choreographers, stuntmen, women, film writers/directors, and film crew members. The subjects will include personal bios of the featured persons and entertainment credits so you may discover some previously unknown treasures starring a favorite star and cuddle up on your comfy couch with some yummy popcorn to enjoy the action.

Steve Lambert- History General

Star Struck is dedicated to Steve Lambert- Stuntman extraordinaire.

Steve Lambert - Sport Kartate History General

Steven Hal Lambert is a stunt coordinator, stuntman, stunt actor, fight choreographer, lifelong martial artist, and actor. He has also worked as James Woods' stunt double for over 25 years.  His movie and television credits are immense, and the cavalcade of stars he has worked with in his career reads like a virtual who's who of movie royalty. He was inducted into the Stuntman’s Hall of Fame in 1986 and was a member of the Stuntman’s Association for 33 years. Professor Gary Lee and the Sport Karate Museum community greatly miss Steve, who passed on August 18, 2023, at only 69 years old. 

Introducing Tadashi Yamashita, 10th dan-History General

Tadashi Yamashita Sensei Grandmaster of Okinawan Karate, Weapons and Entertainer Extrodaire

 Tadashi Yamashita-Sensei has dedicated over 60years of his life to the practice Okinawan Karatedo and Kobudo.  A highly respected man in all circles of the martial arts, Yamashita-Sensei is sought after for karatedo and kobudo seminars from all over the world.  He currently retains the rank of 10th degree black belt in Okinawa Shorin-ryu Karatedo and 10th degree black belt in Zen Okinawa Kobudo He currently retains the rank of 10th degree black belt in Okinawa Shorin-ryu Karatedo and 10th degree black belt in Zen Okinawa Kobudo.  

In 1953 He started his karatedo training with Hanshi Shugoro Nakazato of the Shorin-ryu Shorinkan in Naha, Okinawa.  In 1963 Sensei moved to Chicago, Illinois USA. In 1968 Sensei tested in front of Chibana Chosen-Sensei and Shugoro Nakazato-Sensei for his 7th Dan.  At that successful test, he became the youngest 7th Dan in Okinawa, Japan's history.

 

 Sensei combines many progressive fighting tactics with traditional aspects of karatedo, thus resulting in a devastating fighting system.  Sensei's dynamic fighting system is known as "Suikendo," which translates to, "fist flowing like water." This non-stopping, flowing system of fighting, allows the karateka to simultaneously block and strike his opponent with blinding speed and accuracy.

 

In 1972 Sensei moved to California where many top artists, such as Mike Stone and Ed Parker noticed his talent and skill. This is where Sensei began his friendship with Elvis Presley, Bruce Lee, and various prominent celebrities in the world of entertainment. Eventually, this exposure led to Sensei entering a new part of his career as a successful movie and Television actor, stunt coordinator, and stuntman extraordinaire. In addition, Yamashita Sensei has been featured in numerous prestigious magazine articles and has authored many sought-after instructional martial arts manuals throughout the years.

Professor Gary Lee and the Sport Karate Museum are proud to feature Grandmaster Tadashi Yamashita as our first member of the Star Struck! family and are honored to have him as one of our original Sport Karate Museum History Generals.

Introducing Kim Kahana Stuntman/Fight Choreographer Extraordinaire, and History General

Kim Kahana was one of the most versatile performers within the Star Stuck family of stars. He not only performed spectacular stunts on the big and little screens (Television) but also choreographed fight scenes and was an accomplished actor in his own right. He created a stunt school to teach future generations of stunt people to follow him creating an incredible legacy.


  

Kim Kahana Sr. (October 16, 1929 – August 12, 2024) was an American actor, Stunt performer, and action choreographer of Hawaiian and Japanese descent.  He worked on stunts for over 300 films and television programs and ran a stunt school in Groveland, Florida,  that has trained over 15,000 students.

He tested himself in the world before finding his calling in a stunt work career.

 

Kahana had an eventful period during his service as a paratrooper in the Korean War. He served as a Paratrooper in the Korean War, was wounded, captured, and survived only to later escape from his captors. Mr. Kahana received numerous United States military awards, including a Silver Star, two Bronze Stars, and two Purple Hearts for wounds he sustained. 

Film, television, and stunt career-


Kahana's bigger-than-life film career began after the Korean War with the 1953 film, The Wild One playing a motorcycle rider as an extra. Seeking a career in films, he discovered that stunt players earned more than extras and his lane in the business became clear. This led him to train with stunt veterans Yakima Canutt and John Eppers. By the 1960s he was working regularly as a stuntman which continued throughout the 70s and 80s. A career ultimately spanned over 40 active years.

Kim Kahana accumulated numerous Black Belts in various arts while training in Japan. He eventually expanded his martial arts by creating a successful bodyguard agency and employed up to 30 agents at a time.

Kim opened his famous Kahana Stunt School to train those drawn to the stunt business he loved in 1972 located in Groveland, Florida. Kim advertised a” Full-service action production company featuring a Swamp/Forest location.” Safety was a hallmark of his training and knowledge of the ins and outs of the motion picture and television business. The school has trained over 15,000 and counting.

Kim Kahana R.I.P.

After a very active and illustrious life Kim Kahana, martial artist and stuntman extraordinaire passed away at his home in Groveland, Florida on August 12, 2024 at the honorable age of 94.

Introducing Al Leong, Kung Fu Master, Actor, and Stuntman.

Sifu Al Leong is a consummate Kung Fu master, kata competitor, and celebrated stunt performer.

 

 Albert Leong was born in St. Louis, Missouri on September 30, 1952. He is an accomplished American retired actor, martial artist, stuntman, and stunt coordinator extraordinaire. His family owned a Chinese Laundry with their home on the premises so hard work was a family tradition. At ten years old (1962), his family relocated to Los Angeles, California, and eventually attended Hollywood High School.

The Martial Arts years of Sifu Al Leong

 


In his martial arts foundational training the 5 Animal system of Senior Grandmaster Ark Y. Wong upstairs on Ord St, L.A. Chinatown. An incredible kung fu group, founded by Sifu Doug Wong grew to be a high-quality demonstration team that featured Sifu’s Al Leong and James Lew as its early co-captains. Their arrival at the Long Beach Arena for Ed Parker’s International Karate Tournament was electric. Al was an expert at the Chinese Halberd known as the Quan Dao. The contrast was powerful considering Sifu Leong stood at a compact 5 ft 6 while welding the massive 71/2-foot weapon! He became recognized by many martial arts awards organizations including the Martial Arts History Museum Hall of Fame.

Al Leong expands his talents to conquer the television and movie industry.

   


His martial arts performance and acting skills made him stand out in the Television and Movie industry and he became a sought-after stuntman with a special talent as a gifted stunt coordinator. Having mastered hand to hand combat arts coupled with being a weapons expert made him a popular action team leader. In the industry he is lovingly known as Al "Kabong" Leong.

Al Leong's acting, stunt, and stunt choreography are impressively extensive.

  

Al Leong's massive television and movie credits range over twenty years of acting and stunt work excellence beginning in 1981. Just some of his TV listings include T.J.Hooker, The Fall Guy, Knight Rider, Deadwood, The 70’s Show, and MacGiver to name a few.

His Movie credits are even more impressive with titles encompassing Die Hard, Mortal Kombat, Escape from L.A., Godzilla, Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure, Lethal Weapon 1&4, The Perfect Weapon, and The Scorpion King for which Al was also the stunt coordinator. His list of career credits is more than 70 plus titles.  

In addition to all he accomplished, Al also wrote The Eight Lives of Al Ka-Bong Leong. A testament to his longevity in the martial arts he loved and the entertainment business he enhanced with his presence, personality, and skill.

Sifu Al Leong is a cut above as a martial arts master, stuntman and coordinator.
